As a pilot project on May 15th, 2010 nearly 50 volunteers took to the streets in Portland, Camden and Rockland neighborhoods hoping to motivate homeowners to to save money and energy by weatherizing and by taking other energy saving measures in the home. A larger effort is taking place this fall in Bar Harbor, Fort Kent, Thomaston, Lewiston, South Portland and Bangor/Orono on Saturday October 2.
Trained volunteers will deliver free reusable grocery bags filled with energy saving information, goodies and coupons and have conversations with approxiamtely 1500 homeowners about the importance of weatherizing and the rebates that are available through Efficiency Maine. For more information on the rebates click here. The goal was to talk to and educate their neighbors about residential energy and money saving strategies they can implement in their homes as they reduce their contributions to global climate change.
Training for The Green Sneakers Project is provided by BPI (Building Performance Institute) Contractor and Auditor Richard Burbank, president and owner of Evergreen Home Performance. The Green Sneakers reusable grocery bag that will be given out at the door contains information and resources like CFL bulbs, home weatherization case studies, energy saving tips, contact information to local energy service companies and state and federal incentive programs, as well as a coupon book filled with "Green Sneaker Cash" that can be used at participating businesses.
Green Sneakers volunteers will connect interested homeowners to energy auditors and contractors and will also offer free basic energy walk thru audits to identify key problem areas in their home and the steps they can take to address them.
