The Cool Communities campaign is not just about addressing climate change, its also about promoting clean energy, saving money, empowering communities and creating solutions that help decrease carbon emissions and energy use. The campaign builds an opportunity for a clean energy economy that is needed to be competitive in an era of globalization, create jobs, improve public health, reduce energy costs and relieve strained city budgets. It’s a positive vision for the future that has already attracted local leaders around the country and holds promise for communities of all sizes.
Community groups, residents forming Cool Teams ask their mayor, town council or selectmen to either sign the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement (CPA) or make some pledge to develop an action plan to reduce energy use. The CPA is a public commitment to energy efficiency, to reducing the level of emissions of GHG from city-owned buildings, vehicles and activities to the level that would be required if the Kyoto Protocol were in effect.
