With the strong advocacy of Ami Robbins and Ned Jones, high school seniors at the time, Yarmouth signed the U.S. Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement in February of 2007. The schools have already had an energy audit, and the recommendations will be implemented during this school year. Several youth groups spread the word of energy conservation and greening our town by example, such as the Green Spaces area of the Clam Festival, brought to us by Go Vert.

As of November 2007, the Yarmouth Conservation and Energy Committee has been set up by the town council. The first step will involve an energy audit of the town, after which steps will be taken to address the issues of energy conservation and public education regarding energy. This committee is collaborating with the Green Voices Society of Yarmouth High School, and three members of the 8 person committee are seniors at Yarmouth High School. It is inspiring to see adults and students work together on this issue. It seems that a critical mass has been reached regarding this issue at least in Yarmouth, and the time to act is now!

Please contact us to get in on the action! We are in the start up of planning our implementation in Yarmouth, so we welcome the community’s ideas, help, and, of course, donations to keep the ball rolling! Think wind mills, solar panels on top of Rowe School, etc.

Also, the committee is encouraging residents and businesses to reduce their carbon footprints. After the municipal system is streamlined, the committee plans to tackle this much larger area for improvement. First step: Change those light bulbs to CFLs.

In other news: A solar array, recently won through a state grant, will be installed on Yarmouth High School later this year.
