The town of Pittsfield became the 26th Cool Community in Maine, endorsing the US Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement in Novemeber 2009 and signed by Mayor Timothy Nichols.
Since 2002 Pittsfield has been engaged in environmental stewardship initiatives as part of a strategic Energy and Environmental Conservation Plan. The plan “provides guidance for conscientious energy decision-making; improves the efficient use of energy and transportation; and protects the environment while providing services in all of these areas.”
Among the highlights of the town’s accomplishments are: a successful multi-year recycle/re-use campaign that includes neighboring communities and special activities throughout the year such as Trash to Treasures Days, which result in substantial energy and financial savings; renovation and new construction of public buildings such as the library and water pump station that included installation of energy efficiency and conservation technologies; an urban forest campaign; and most recently, installation of a 10kW wind turbine at the town’s Recycling Facility in September 2009, with the local high school playing a role in developing an educational program focused on the wind project.
