Belfast was the first city in Maine to sign onto the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement Belfast has an Energy and Climate Committee that usually meets on the second Monday of every month at 7pm at Belfast City Hall. They are working to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Belfast. The City Council passed a resolution to join ICLEI (International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives) which has a computer program helpful in developing local Climate Action Plans.
As of December 2009, the City of Belfast has completed a greenhouse gas inventory and is working on developing a Climate Action Plan. The city is also moving towards getting energy audits completed on all municipal buildings and providing more community education on energy efficiency and conservation.
Each month, the city has an ”Energy Challenge” to engage the community in efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
